Long Hyung ( Chang Hyung )

All movement is within just one set. All offensive and defensive movement is performed in a 360° radius or more. Long Hyung is approximately 70% mental and 30% physical. All movements require flexibility, coordination, strength and speed. Once you observe the movements, you will understand how each is related to the other. The average time required to finish these Hyungs vary between approximately 1 & 1/2 hours to 5 hours.

Dok Sa, movements derived from the study of a snake attack: bite and strike.

  1. Tang Nang - Movement comes from the motion of the deep ocean surf: soft and smooth, up and down, sharp and strong. Offensive and defensive movement is executed as one. The entire body develops great strength. Good for developing both mental and physical strength.
  2. Tang Nang Cho Yo - Movement is like that of a deep ocean wave. Similar to Tang Nang, except uses a great deal more internal and external strength. Very powerful.
  3. Qua Dae Quan - Movement is like that of a big rock rolling down a mountain. The entire body moves as one. Offensive and defensive movement is executed. Quick reflexes are necessary. Benefits are both mental and spiritual.
  4. Wang Soong E Myo Bap - Movement is like that of a monkey. Offense and defense movements have very quick changes of direction. Movement comes in from all directions, 360° or more (pictured below).

  5. Chui Kwan - Movement is like that of a drunken person. Defensive action is flexible, like rubber. Offensive movement explodes like a cat pouncing on a mouse. Very powerful.
  6. Ho Bar Toop - Movement comes from observing that of a tiger: moving in all different directions, low and high, turning 360 degrees or more. Extremely powerful.

    In practicing Ho Bar Toop, one moves the way a tiger moves, hands and feet moving in unison with the entire body. The practitioner must feel each movement: combining fast and slow, soft and circular movement with breathing control. Observers will feel as though they are actually watching a stalking and attacking tiger.
  7. Kum Gang Quan Bope - Movement is like that of an avalanche of rocks rolling down a mountain and over a cliff. Very quick defense. Offense is like a volcano exploding. A lot of mental and spiritual practice is necessary. Most benefit derived by practicing after sunset and before sunrise. Makes use of senses other than vision.
  8. Young Doo San Quan Bope - Movement comes from the idea of a dragon sitting atop a mountain. Offensive movements are like a dragon striking with it's tail. A great deal of mental and physical strength is required. Defensive movement is like the head of the dragon striking. Extremely quick and powerful. Offensive and defensive attacks are executed at the same time. Always practiced after sunset and before sunrise. Uses senses other than eyesight. For daytime practice, the eyes are covered, striking falling objects, like leaves falling from a tree, or stones thrown in the air. This movement requires a lot of spiritual practice and discipline. This is the highest Hyung that can be achieved. If achieved, you will retain great mental, spiritual and physical benefits for life (pictured below).

The different movements (Short, Middle and Long Hyung) described above were developed by Grandmasters. There will be further explanation of each of these movements in school lessons. Someone observing a Hyung being demonstrated, will see the particular quality and character of that movement expressed. For example, in the dragon movement, you will believe that you are actually seeing a fighting dragon.
